Celebrating Our 25th Anniversary!


Three levels of study are offered for students at NPITYA, July 8 – 12, 2008. Please note that the final young artist recitals take place on July 12, one day after the end of the Teacher Institute. Daily schedule of Beginner and Intermediate levels is 9:00am – 4:15pm; advanced students and intermediate students entering grade 8 and above are encouraged to stay overnight to participate in evening recitals and events. Lunch is included and will be served on-campus. All students must have two (2) well-prepared, memorized pieces and a third piece (not necessarily memorized) ready for daily lessons, master classes and the final recital to be held on Saturday. Students may perform both solo and ensemble pieces at the final recital. Special events include guest performances, a solo recital featuring all NPITYA students, an ensemble recital prepared by NPITYA students during the week, a visit to Meadows Museum, and a swim party (optional).

Beginner Level

Interactive full-day experience geared towards children who have completed 1– 3 years of piano study. The day involves rhythm and movement classes, performance class, semi-private lessons, ensemble, music history, and much more. Sample repertoire includes any music in method books up to level 2 – 3 up to the level of a Bach Minuet or Bastien Sonatinas.

Intermediate Level

This intermediate level is designed for students who already have a solid musical foundation. Example repertoire level includes a Bach Minuet or Clementi Sonatina, Op. 36, No 1 up to the level of Bach Inventions and Beethoven Sonata, Op. 49, no.1. All students participate in daily private lessons, master classes, and more. Students entering grades 8 and above are strongly encouraged to stay overnight in the SMU dorm; a counselor will be present at all times.

Advanced Level

A performance-intensive institute for students studying advanced levels of repertoire. Sample repertoire includes Beethoven Sonatas, Chopin Nocturnes, Gershwin Preludes. All students participate in private lessons and master classes with SMU professors, and other classes including piano literature and ensemble. Students entering grades 8 and above are strongly encouraged to stay overnight in the SMU dorm; a counselor will be present at all times.
